How much do you know about proper watch care?

Watch Battery Repair

Proper watch care

Whether you spent $20 or $20,000 dollars on your watch, you should take care of it to protect your investment and keep it looking beautiful. Proper, regular maintenance will help keep your watch telling accurate time and looking great. Performing regular maintenance, cleaning & watch battery replacement will keep your watch running for years. Remember: Here at WatchGnome, we always recommend referring to the manufacturer's instruction manual for care and warranty items!

Beware of water

Water is a common hazard for most watch owners. If your watch is not water proof or at least water resistant you need to take care and avoid incurring water damage with your watch.

  • Look for water resistances in your instruction manual and follow the manufacturer's guidelines regarding water exposure.
  • If water does get in your watch face, you may see condensation. Don't throw your water-damaged watch away! Have it checked by a professional watch repairman who may be able to save your watch. Sometimes the case can be opened and the watch can be dried out. But don't procrastinate - the longer it stays wet, the higher the risk of the watch being permanently ruined.
  • We had a Michael Kors watch battery replacement order last week that had slight fogging on the inside of the watch crystal when it arrived, but were able to dry it out and it works perfectly!

Temperature and Chemicals

Avoid leaving your watch out in extreme heat or cold. Extreme heat will shorten the life span of the battery. Extreme cold may cause the watch to lose time.

You should also avoid exposure to (discoloration and deterioration may result):

  • Solvents like household cleaning agents: Take your watch off before doing the dishes, cleaning the bathroom or mopping the floors
  • Chemicals: Things like pool cleaners or many industrial chemicals can tarnish or corrode your watch, so avoid them as much as possible
  • Gases: Although not as common as the items above, this can sometimes occur. A good warning to the science teachers our there!

Other Care Needs

There are a few other things to keep in mind when thinking about proper watch care:

  • Avoid dropping your watch or having any impact to your watch. They are made to wear on your wrist and will naturally be exposed to some wear and tear but sharp jarring motions have shorten their life or impede their time keeping.
  • Do not expose your watch to electricity or magnets. These could impact the electrical currents or gears in your watch. (household appliances are safe!)
  • Your watch may corrode if worn in salt water.
  • Take it in to a specialist anytime you have damage to your watch. And don't wait. Often the sooner you can get it repaired the less likely the damage is to be permanent.
  • Have your watch cleaned and the battery changed professionally.
  • Follow your manufacturer's guidelines for service and repair.

Maintaining your watch is an important part of keeping your watch in good working order. By performing some regular maintenance you will be able to make your watch last for a lifetime or at least until you decide to upgrade to that expensive watch you have always wanted!
