Calvin Klein was originally founded in 1968 as Calvin Klein Limited as a coat shop in the York Hotel in NYC. He started the business with only $10,000 dollars and products a collection coats and dresses aimed at a youthful crown.

By 1971, Calvin Klein had expanded their product lines substantially and now had blazers, sportswear and lingerie.

In the late '70s, the company became overly extended when it attempted to move into fragrance and cosmetics. It resulted in huge financial losses and withdrew from those markets. In the 1980s, they launched a highly successful designer-jeans line and capitalized on the times. In the 1990's the business began to take off from their underwear business. They worked with big name stars like Mark Wahlber to promote the products. 

In 2002, Calvin Klein was sold to Phillips Van Heusen Corp for about $400 million in cash and licensing rights.  The transaction between Calvin Klein and PVH was financially supported by Apax Partners Inc., a New York private equity firm.
