Wittnauer Watch History
Wittnauer watches was founded by Albert Wittnauer was a Swiss immigrant who arrived in New York City in 1872 at the age of 16. He began working for his brother in law, Eugene Robert who was an importer of fine Swiss watches. Albert Wittnauer decided there was a need for new watches that were designed with all of the high end durability and function that the American public wanted but with more affordable prices. He decided the solution for this was to build them with local production.
The first line was crafted in 1880 although the brand was formally established in 1885, when Mr. Robert gave the title to Albert Wittnauer under the name The "A. Wittnauer Company". The Wittnauer company started as a family business, catering to the ever growing world of both scientific and private exploration, which gained them a reputation for use by those who needed reliability: navigators, explorers, and astronomers.[2]
In following years, Wittnauer watches grew steadily and moved to New York. In order to continue growing the company, they purchased a factory in Puerto Rico. In 1916 the last Wittnauer brother died and Martha Wittnauer became the first woman watchmaker CEO.
Wittnauer watches and instruments were widely used in scientific expeditions. In fact they were one of the 3 contenders for the first mission to the moon along with Longines and Omega Speedmaster and Rolex Daytona. Also, Amelia Earhart in 1926 made the first solo flight across the Atlantic with her plane which was equipped with Wittnauer instruments.
The Wittnauer Company changed hands of ownership a number of times in the 20th century but retained its reputation for most of the 20th century. After some budget problems, it was eventually bought by Bulova for 11.6 million dollars in September 2001.
