Gianni Versace opened his first boutique in Milan in 1978. At the time, Versace only designed clothing, but he soon broadened his line to include accessories, jewelery, home furnishings, and china. For his logo, Versace chose the head of Medusa, which he'd seen many a times on the floor of Roman ruins where he and his siblings played as children. He wanted his designs to have the same effect as the Greek mythological creature: to fall in love with his company with no return.
Versace wanted his collections to stand out. He used flashy prints and bright colors, and many of his designs became iconic in the fashion world. He was often referred to as the "Rock 'n Roll" designer because he worked with many famous musicians, such as Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and Elton John. He designed the famous black dress known as "THAT dress" worn by Elizabeth Hurley at a movie premier. The black dress is one of the most covered dresses in global press and made the then still unknown Hurley a global media star. Gianna Versace met an unfortunate death when he was murdered outside his home in 1997. The future of the company was in question by many, but Gianni's siblings Donatella and Santo took over and the company has remained at the forefront of the fashion industry.
Versace watches are designed in the Versace headquarters in Italy, some even by Donatella herself, others by the brand's top design team. The watches are then manufactured in Switzerland by expert Swiss watchmakers to meet strict certification standards and criteria for quality.
