How To Change MVMT Watch Battery

These brand new MVMT watches are good quality, stylish watches built at an affordable price. Maybe you are the do it yourself kind of person. If so, you can change the battery yourself if you have the tools and skills, but it really is best to have a professional change the battery for a number of reasons:

  1. Tightly fitting casebacks with screw locks. Some MVMT watches have a screw down case back that is held securely by the threads on the back of the case. It requires a special set of tools and skills to remove them without stripping the notches on the back of the case and preventing damage.
  2. Tightly pressed, inserted casebacks. MVMT timepieces that don't have screw casebacks will often have pressbacks instead. These require a very small & sharp watch knife to pry the back off. Doing it wrong could result in a scratched watch, cut fingers or bending the caseback (which would prevent your watch from properly resealing). We have gotten more than a few watches sent to us that were scratched and bent from incorrect work.
  3. Fine, battery restraint arm. Many of these watches have a small moveable arm that holds the MVMT watch battery in place and completes the circuit to power the watch movement. This small arm is often rather delicate and requires the loosening of a small screw to move it out of the way. You must do this very carefully to reduce the changes of stripping the screw. You should also be careful not to let the screw driver slip because you could damage your watch coil and ruin the watch. Not to mention it's very easy to drop or lose the screw or arm. And once it's gone - it could be up to $40 or $50 to replace it!
  4. Top quality battery. Fossil watches use a variety of watch battery sizes ranging from 364, 371, 373, 377 or 395 batteries, so it's always critical to double check. Here at WatchGnome, we always make sure to use a top quality battery like Energizer, Renata or Sony. It's also critical to change the battery without touching it with your hands. It's best to avoid getting the oils from your hands on it to reduce corrosion risk.
  5. Seating the Battery Restraint Arm. This is a skill that has taken our technicians months of training to ensure they get the battery in the right place and the arm tightened correctly without stripping the screw or over tightening the battery.
  6. Proper case resealing and screw tensioning. Once the battery in your MVMT has been replaced with a new, fresh one, the next step is to replace the battery arm and gently tighten the holding screw again. Replace the face retainer clip and then then retighten the caseback.
